The survivors are left with nothing. Currently they need drinking water and food for survival, fuel and blanket to combat the cold winter. They also need to rebuild their homeland, which for most part of the Tohoku region, had been completed destroyed.

There are many donation links out there, but some might be hoax. Therefore it is best not to donate via 3rd party organizations. Red Cross (listed in Embassy of Japan in Singapore) and Doctors Without Borders are still among the most trusted organization.

rainy morning... will it flood?
i'm afraid the answer is YES.

Just 9 days after the devastrating Great Orchard Flood, Singapore experience serious flood again. & this time it affects more areas, some ain't even traditional flood prone area, eg Tampines.

Honest, I'm very surprise that Tampines Central flood. Cleaners of Tampines One are sweeping rainwater out of their mall (sadly into the interchange walkway & Eastlink Mall). Later when I arrive in office, I heard from my colleagues that Tampines West experience heavier rain & thus flood more seriously. A PIE exit even needs to be close due to flood!?

Elsewhere, a kindergarten in Telok Kurau is seriously flood and SCDF needs to rescue the kids to safety / high ground. They even need to host these kids in nearby bungalows unaffected by flood.

Numerous trees are also uprooted and fell onto busy roads.

June is the month of Southwest Monsoon, which would bring 'Sumatra' (heavy rain in the early morning brought from the Sumatra mountains, hence the name) [see how practical Geography is]. Although it is monsoon season, rainfall isnt as much as the Northeast Monsoon, mostly due to the small waterbodies of Melaka and Singapore Straits. I can't imagine how bad Singapore will be flood during the main rainy season when Northeast Monsoon arrive in November-February.

I can't help, but worry about our so-called 'world class' drainage system & ignorant authorities.

Great Orchard Flood!!!

Today it's "duan wu jie", which for this summer festival is suppose to be hot & warm.

However Orchard Road was severly flooded this morning, with the junction of Orchard Road and Scotts Road being the worst hit. The water is muddy brown and when car drive through, it would stir a huge tidal wave across the junction.

Several shopping malls in the vicinity like Wheelock Place, Tangs and Lucky Plaza were seriously hit by the water. News footage shows books soak in the brownish water, shower essentials floating around the shop floor of Watsons, tables and chairs of Mcdonald's and Wendys drenched, and mannequins being washed out of fashion boutique...

News report state that the water reaches 300mm in depth and it is the worst flood to hit the popular shopping belt since 1984. Other areas flooded includes Bukit Timah, Rochor and Kampong Java.

That is the last time Ah Ma smile to me. :)
At that time, although bedridden, she is still conscious, very cheerful and lively.

Thinking back of this smile, I feel very sweet inside; but at the same time have the urge of crying. a bittersweet memories.

A slight regret would be I did not photograph her smile (coz Mumy disapprove taking photo in hospital ward). But her smile will always be in my heart.

today marks ah ma 1st lunar death anniversary. (note the date is adjusted accordingly to several hokkien customs).

wake up rather early (a good habit for the past few days) :)
we reach Blk 453 at around 9.15am and met 4th auntie at the carpark.
after chatting for a while we took the lift to level 6 where most of the extended family hang about at the lobby for a long while. for most of the time, i'm playing with giok lian :)

after hearing some ringing sound, we proceed to level 8. a short prayer begin and all joss paper products are transported to the burning site. after much preparation and another short prayer, the joss paper house and products are ignited. everything is burnt almost instantly. returning to level 8, there is a final short prayer.

the curry puff and ang ku kueh taste really good. buffet (by Yeh Lai Siang Catering Service) is not bad. actually wanted to eat the prawn, but doesnt want to dirty my hand. i'm also too full to eat the kou rou pau.

the hot qing ting steal the limelight. many relatives complain that hot qing ting isnt appropriate for the extremely hot weather, thus my cousins go to NTUC to buy ice. the qing ting is so hot that the entire pack of ice melt almost instantly. :D

looking back, time really flies...

has been sleeping very early at around 12am everyday, and it is a very deep sleep for the next 12h. <3 but yet i still need an afternoon nap. :D

yesterday, as night falls... my body feels more and more lethargic. took panadol but my temperature still rise up to 38.6°C... lost all appetite and it took me a long time to finish a pack of mui fan (recently i'm eating v slowly).

rising body temperature + terrible headache and giddiness persist through the night. (which the last time i had these symptoms is after BMT field camp (11.2005)). i feel so sleepy that i actually slept at 12am! (a record since i enrolled into adm). before that i'm so weak that i can't even stand properly to brush my teeth :(

feels really cold despite not turning on the aircon. i had a deep sleep (normally i already sleep very deeply; the sickness makes me sleep even more deeply) with random nightmares (like those in childhood)... i woke at 2am feeling as if i had slept for several hours, which in reality, i only slept for 2h... i feel very hot and i'm sweating intensively. after going to toilet, i measure my temperature again, which has shoot up to 39.2°C ... :( now the headache and giddiness is really unbearable and my enitre body aches... :[ this reminds me of the infamous 'so near to death' feeling after Pulau Ubin (12.2001)... i continue to sleep till morning, which subconsciously i can feel that mumy keeps touching my body to check my temperature (feels so sweet inside <3)...

i wake up surprisingly early (around 8am) to see the doctor. The clinic is quite packed. :? The nurse told me that they didnt have my previous record coz my last visit is in 2005 (that post BMT field camp sickness) :) The 1st question Doctor Tan ask me is "Are you a student?", coz he say i have the 'student look'. ;) After saying that I have a fever, Doctor Tan immediately ask if I have yellow salty phlegm, running nose, urge of vommiting... reflects that this cold is very common recently :(

this is my itenary for today 1.11.09 (sun).

it's sunny...

initially at 2pm i plan to go Singapore River for photo-shot, but cancel coz from my windows I saw black clouds. but in the end, it didnt rain at all & it's v sunny thru the evening; shld have go. but nvm, i change my plan to photo in the morning, so i can have a variety of sunlight, which increase the variety of photo i can choose from.

so in the end, i didnt leave my home at all. v typical for me (my highest record is 7days at home). therefore today photo are a bit boring...

4pm: home

was tracing the map of Singapore River using illustrator.

Collecting/Reading map is one of my interest. it started when i was 9 and since then I have a strong interest on local geography and social history. i would buy new edition of Singapore Street Directory whenever it's release & go to the library to research on old edition during holiday.

in the photo are the 2002 & 2007 (latest) edition, with spread showing where Alexandra Canal become Singapore River.

i also collect free map from tourist information counter & online.

about to take a shower. shower is my way of relaxation, which i could easily spent 30min-1h. water brings me inspiration. sometime i'll brainstorm for too long that i forget to come out.

i buy a roll of film & took the train back to Tampines...
when the train get out of the tunnel at Kallang, its pouring heavily and visibility is low.
reach Tampines at 6.20pm, the rain has tone down, but it is still heavy. wind is so strong that it spoilt my umbrella...

this is my itenary for today 30.10.09 (fri)...
its overcast in the morning, heavy rain around noon, clear for early afternoon and rain in the evening... its quite cold tonight...

for much of the morning, i was having my last minute rush/touch-up to my essay.

then at 1pm my father drive me to NUS (National University of Singapore, where i'm having my local exchange programme) for printing and submission.

its raining quite heavily but ironically on the Sheares Bridge (bridge in the city that carrys ECP expressway), a car with signs of burnt engine cause massive jam at the opposite direction. the jam is about 2km long.

after submission, my father drive me to NTU (Nanyang Technological University, my home university), where my project group had consultation with our prof. due to unforesee delays in consultation timetable, my group had a very late lunch.

4pm: NTU Canteen A
fishball mee (noodles) is a famous Teochew Chinese dish.
i'm recently obsessed with fishball mee. i usually order meepok (we can choose the type of noodles we want, just like pasta), without chilli sauce but with ketchup (so i can taste the sweetness of the soup).

7pm: Jalan Besar stadium
final recee for our on-site project in the outskirt of Little India. Although the government opt to call this historical area Little India (which is more toursim oriented) rather than Kandang Kerbau or Tekka (which both have strong historical connection with the area).
Jalan Besar stadium is the 2nd most important stadium after National Stadium. My project group went up the opposite block of HDB flat to see which level command the best view on the field. We tried the top floor (27th), 20th and 15th. The photo is taken from the 15th storey.
Due to the stadium and Little India conservation zone, this block of flat has an extremely far vista uncommon in HDB flats.

Tampines District consists of Tampines New Town, Tampines Rural Area, Tampines industrial park, Simei estate, Changi South industrial park and Xilin greens. Tampines New Town is further divided into 9 neighbourhoods, and each neighbourhood is further divide into precints, which each precint consists of around 10 blocks of flats.

it is rainy in the morning, and gradually becomes clear in late afternoon...
its rather cold throughout the night. like what my mother say, we believe the monsoon has more or less arrived...
i'm rushing my 2,000 words art history essay in the morning, which is due on friday...

4pm: Tampines North
this is the streetview of my neighbourhood, where I spend most of my entire life.
Tampines is a large suburb, which is the regional centre (equivalent to state capital) of Singapore East Region. The town covers an area of about 200hectare and has a population of about 220,000.
Almost 86% of Singapore population resides in HDB flats (public housing). There are 20 suburb towns in Singapore and all have extremely high population density.

doing research for my essay. my topic of research is the "relationship between nature and human in Chinese landscape painting".
this painting is Li Cheng's "Buddhist Temple in the Mountain after Rain".

10pm: Tampines North Community Club
on my walk home. Tampines North just celebrated its 20th anniversary a few weeks ago. Prior to urbanization in 1979, Tampines is covered with kampong (malay word for village) with rubber plantation, pig/duck rearing, fish farm, agriculture, sand quarrying and dumping groups. My family used to live in Tampines kampong, before the land was acquisited by the government in 1986 for construction of Tampines Expressway.

eating nasi lemak (which my parents takeaway from a famous stall in Hougang) for dinner and reading tabloid. this tabloid is forecasting which Hong Kong actress would win "TVB Best Actress Award" next month.

This is a inter-school collaboration project, in which student of Singapore NTU ADM Publication Design class is paired up with student of Germany Kiel Muthesius Kunsthochschule.

My partner is Bryndis, a bubbling 27 year old Icelandic girl, who is has resides in Kiel for the past 4 years.

Although I'm trying hard to cherish before losing, I have to admit that I'm still pretty much taking things for granted...

Out of the blue in less than 2 weeks, Blk 445 coffee shop is being sold and the new owner is fetching an incredible sky high rent on current stallholders. Withhold by the steep rent, my favourite western food stall decides to retire from business...

CHARLES GRILL current stall

Starting business in the late 1980s by an uncle and 2 aunties, CHARLES GRILL is the 2nd generation western food stallholder of Blk 445 coffee shop. Serving delicious western food at affordable price and of consistent high quality, CHARLES GRILL is the only stall of Blk 445 coffee shop that withstood the test of time, as the remaining stalls have undergone numerous change of ownership...

CHARLES GRILL menu

The menu of CHARLES GRILL consists of Sirloin Steak, Lamb Chop, Half Spring Chicken, Chicken Cutlet, Chicken Chop, Pork Chop, Pork Cutlet, Fish Cutlet, Sausage & Eggs and Chicken Wings... Initially selling as only 3 Chicken Wings, it is later evolve into a full Chicken Wings Set in recent years. Baked beans of Fish Cutlet are also change into tartar sauces in late 1990s... All sets serve the main course with french fries, baked beans with cucumber and tomato slices. The large crispy breaded 2 pieces Fish Cutlet is the reputed signature dish of CHARLES GRILL, attracting customers from all parts of Tampines... By eating at the coffee shop, the food are serve on a large white ceramic plate with fork and knife wrap in paper napkin accompany with bottles of chilli and ketchup...

CHARLES GRILL kitchen

Initially located at the 1st stall with an open kitchen along the corridor, customers get to see how their order is being cooked. The viewing provides customers with a rare insight into the cooking process. It is extremely interesting viewing steak and chops being grill, cutlets, spring chicken, chicken wings and fries being fried, baked beans and sausages being steam, before being place onto plates or take away packs... Following a change of ownership of Blk 445 coffee shop in 2004, CHARLES GRILL shift into an inner stall due to steep rent increase of their original stall. With this shift, customers no longer have the chance of viewing the cooking process and visibility of the stall from St 42 is greatly reduced...

Way before I attended kindergarten, my family have been patronising CHARLES GRILL since its establishment, meaning I have been eating its western food for almost my entire life so far... Back then, I remembered papa would always order Fish Cutlet while mumy would order Pork Chop... At that time, whenever my family order take away from CHARLES GRILL, my brother and I would always play at the gentle sloping lawn in front of the open kitchen. It is common for the two of us to jump up and down the rectangular granite manhole or run around the numerous jackfruit trees... It has also been much of a traditional for my family to take away CHARLES GRILL on pre-primary NDP, eating Fish Cutlet, Pork Chop and other tze cha food while watching the parade live telecast... When I start attending primary school, I become interested in watching the cooking process from the open kitchen... With more pocket money after entering secondary school, I start to patronise CHARLES GRILL more frequently... Recently since 2003, I would take away CHARLES GRILL after finishing my weekly run along Tampines Park Connector... It is very sweet that the aunties remembered my preferences for more chilli or ketchup whenever I buy take away...

Throughout the years, I have tasted almost the whole menu. I don't have any favourite as all taste equally good, but Fish Cutlet is what I usually order. The large breaded Chicken Cutlet is crispy and yet not oily and it is rare for western food stall to serve breaded Pork Cutlet and large breaded Fish Cutlet. The grilled Chicken Chop and Pork Chop is lean and not over or under cook, making it extremely delicious. The unique Chicken Wings are seasoned with hua diao jiu and several fragrant seasoning before deep fried into a beautiful golden brown. For a light meal, Sausage & Eggs would be just perfect. CHARLES GRILL uses the large cut french fries that is seldom serve in western food stall. I personally preferred this type of fries as with more potato interior, it will not be too salty and the taste of potato is more obvious. Sometimes if you are lucky, you might get freshly fried french fries for your meal. It is my greatest pity that I have not tasted Sirloin Steak, Lamb Chop and Half Spring Chicken...

Over the years, CHARLES GRILL has undisputedly certified as my favourite western food stall and till now I have not find any western food stall of standard near CHARLES GRILL. It is really a great pity that the trio of CHARLES GRILL decides to retire with no successor taking over the business... It is a shame that another good food stall has walked into history, typically serious for the concrete jungle of Tampines where finding good food can be a difficult chore... However, being in the greasy kitchen for the past 20 over years, it is really time for the trio to retire and enjoy...

As the last day business on 14.12.07, it is a bittersweet scenario near the final moments. I'm personally there at around 8pm, when on a typical day orders are at its peak. Many regular customers patronise CHARLES GRILL for the last time resulting in all main courses running out of stock. Uncle and aunties are reserving very minimal of their stock for their children, who are coming later to commemorate their retirement. Sausage & Eggs is the only set left, so customers decides to make do with it, as it is far much better leaving empty handed and in regret. For me, this is the first time I'm eating Sausage & Eggs, and sadly it is the last time I could taste it. Being one of the last customers, uncle and aunties agreed to let me took a photo of them as memorial...

3D Design & Volume Portfolio 2 - Dot
In this volume, I will be showcasing "Dot", my second assignment from the subject 3D Design & Volume. For this assignment, dots created from hole puncher (although dots of other size can also be use too, depending on personal preference and creativity) is used to create 12 A4 pieces of movement, form and volume in 2D space.

Dot consists of 12 artworks, namely: bone, surf, oasis, stem, rose, river, wave, fly!, fireworks, ♥, 文 and 彬.

Although each piece constitutes a complete artwork, when joined, another piece of work in a bigger scale is form.

Dot

A combination of impressionism and minimalism is adopted to present an abstract imagery. These approaches are particularly obvious in "surf", "rose" and "fireworks".

Movement is represented through a series of curves, most notably in the interlude "stem", "river", "wave" and "fly!".

Special attention is paid to geometry. Symmetrical balance is achieve in "文", whereas asymmetrical balance is deploy for "bone", "oasis", "♥" and "彬".

Visual texture is work on in "rose" and "fireworks", in which the layout of dots portraits an illusion of layering.

Negative space is heavily tap on for "bone", "surf", "oasis", "stem", "rose", "river", "wave", "fly!" and "fireworks"; so as to make the artworks looks complete when standalone and yet enables the flow of storyline in the greater perspective.

This assignment might seem easy but it is extremely tedious and time consuming! Much creativity, effort, patient and persistent is needed throughout the work process, starting from the careful application of white glue using toothpick to prevent it from smearing out of the dot, accurate pasting to ensure dots form desired line or shape, and detailed planning to make all 12 pages link together. As a result, I spent the whole National Day working on this project. The effort is definitely worthwhile as I get much satisfaction from the final product.

Located at the junction of Punggol Road and Punggol Field, this executive condominium site is now released for application under the Reserve List.

The Executive Condominium Housing Scheme (ECHS) was introduced in 1995 for household income of up to $10,000 a month to own private housing. Executive condominium projects are strata-titled apartments with facilities comparable to private condominiums; but new executive condominium units are sold with initial eligibility and ownership restrictions similar to public housing. In conjunction with the launch of this Punggol site, HDB has refined ECHS to better meet demands and align more closely with new public housing schemes. The revised policy will take effect for the purchase of new executive condominium units commencing from this Punggol site.

Minister for National Development Mr Mah Bow Tan announced that HDB has plans to offer another 6,000 new flats under the BTO system between December 2007 and June 2008 in response to strong demand. HDB will also be releasing 4 DBSS sites at Bishan N2 in December 2007 with an estimated yield of about 390 units, Simei in February 2008 with an estimated yield of about 260 units, Toa Payoh N4 in April 2008 with an estimated yield of about 860 units, and Bedok N7 in June 2008 with an estimated yield of about 350 units. HDB will also progressively release another 3 executive condominium sites at Yishun N4 in February 2008 with an estimated yield of about 380 units, Jurong West N5 in March 2008 with an estimated yield of about 460 units, and Sengkang N1 in April 2008 with an estimated yield of about 460 units.

Affected eligible tenants and stallholders will receive the standard clearance benefits and be given appropriate assistance where necessary.

3D Design & Volume Portfolio 1 - Staple
Starting from this volume, I will be showcasing works done during my first semester in ADM. "Staple" is not only the first assignment of the subject 3D Design & Volume, but also the very first assignment of my study life in ADM.

"Staple" consists of 3 standalone artworks, namely: "1 min", "10 min" and "12 staples".

Staple - 1 min

For "1 min", the class is given 1 minute to complete the artwork. My work is very much experimental as I'm still relatively new to the subject and environment.

Staple - 10 min

Unlike the previous work, "10 min" allows the class to complete the artwork within 10 minutes. With a much longer time limit, there is a greater tendency to overdo. This prove that more does not necessary be good.

Staple - 12 staples

"12 staples" restricted the amount of staple to 12. Contradicting with "10 min", the final product of "12 staple" is simple yet elegant, thus prove that simple is beautiful.

After this assignment, I have a better insight to the subject and 3-Dimensional object.

Being Tian An's 22nd birthday celebration, the two of us decided to explore the much hyped Tanglin Village.

Alighting at the bus stop after Botanic Gardens, the two of us walk up the weathered stairs to a restored posh French restaurant. We continue our way up to the former Ebenezer Chapel before reaching our destination Dempsey Hill.

After a satisfying meal, both of us continue to explore the precinct, and nearby Loewen Road and Ridley Park, indulging in the tranquil ambience and snapping several photos of our adventure. Reaching Tanglin Road, we took bus #111 to Orchard Paragon...

BMT gathering (22.9.07)

This BMT gathering is organised as a post-ORD celebration. Meeting at Somerset MRT station, Zhong Sheng, Darryl, Chris and I proceed for some window shopping at the malls before meeting Tiong Peng at Wisma Atria. On our way to meet Tok Soon at Orchard Building and KC at Somerset MRT, the 5 of us discuss on where to have our dinner and decided on my recommendation Waraku. Shortly after settling down at the alfresco table, Weimin called as he can't find his way to the restaurant so I went out to fetch him. Ryan can't make it as he has to look after her girlfriend who is sick...

Finally with everyone present, the 8 of us place our order and have a nice meal. After a pleasant meal, there is some discrepancy on individual bill payment, which took us quite long to resolve...

After settling the bills, the 8 of us walk out of Starhub Centre and along Cuppage Road, I encounter Michelle and Frankie. Knowing that Michelle is my crush, these friends of mine starts to sabotage me, like asking me to introduce Michelle but they will went to hide. Although the atmosphere is rather awkward, I'm still grateful for the encouragement they give after this. Following this, the 8 of us go to Cineleisure for more window shopping. As Tiong Peng show much interest with the "Mr Masturbate" t-shirt, I buy it for his as birthday gift...

Feeling bored and tired, the 8 of us decided to have supper at Boon Keng roti prata store. Like the last visit, we also crack silly jokes, pass sarcastic comments, shares future prospect and have some good laugh over the stupidest repeated telecast of BMT classic. After chilling for sometime, I took bus #23 back home...

ADM Mooncake Festival Party (20.9.07)

Upon finishing our Western Art History make-up tutorial and being the last day of the term, Brian, Mimi, May, Wei Tyng, Wendy and I make our way to the much anticipated ADM Mooncake Festival Party. Bryan, Willis and Candice only join us much later as they have to attend something else. Despite much publicity conducted prior to the event, ADM Mooncake Festival Party is a sheer disappointment. There is no food, drinks, games or even an event host. Participants are expected to bring their own lanterns, mooncakes and entertain themselves.

Although disappointed, my group still have a fun time, by lighting up the traditional paper lanterns Brian bought. We would then take a stroll about the roof top hoping to seek attention on our lanterns. As it is very windy on the roof top, candles are difficult to light and lanterns caught fire easily, Brian's being the first. It is interesting that only half of the lantern is burnt and it is still functional, just that addition care and caution should be exercise. Without fail, climax is always reach whenever someone lantern caught fire, to be accompanied by random loud scream.

With the arrival of Bryan and Willis, we get to eat the mooncakes Bryan bought and begin playing silly nonsense games. The 8 of us get so engross with these games that we can't stop laughing for the next few hours. When we are finally exhausted and bored, we decided to call Candice, who just finished her duty, to bring cardboards, so we can slide down the roof top.

Soon, Candice appears with the cardboards and we begin experimenting sliding down the steep roof top. However, due to unknown technical constraints, the slide does not seem to work the way we want and we have to push it manually with our hands in order to slide down. Therefore Candice thinks of alternative positions and eventually with the idea of rolling down the slope, with mini competitions held to identify who is the fastest to roll down. Our actions attract attention from other bored schoolmates and passerbys, and some of them ended up doing the same.

My group plays until around midnight when we are really drained of energy, leaving for home only at this time...

With 2 complementary tickets from his friend, Ryan invites me to join him for the "TRAFFIC JAM" street parties, organized by Sony Ericsson and SingTel. Before attending the grand event, I had to go ART FRIEND to purchase wooden board and spray paints for my 3D Wire project...

The two of us arrive sharply on 6pm at the already closed-to-traffic Connaught Drive, where the street parties will be held. Upon arrival, we are amazed with the numerous huge vehicles parked as props, the huge stage and the tight securities at the vicinity. Although we arrived on time, the party is not ready yet, so the two of us decides to shop at Citylink Mall for drinks and bites. Returning back quite some time later, the parties is still not open yet, so Ryan and I loiter around the vicinity, snapping photos of ourselves with the vehicles.

Despite having the gate closed, Inquisitive carried on mixing music on the stage to warm up the atmosphere for the actual start. Finally after a long wait, entrance into the street parties is open. Top local band Electrico starts off the evening by performing several hit numbers before ending off with an untitled ballad-rock new song. It is amazing that the stage lightings are synchronized with the music, pretty up against the standard of J-pop concert. Coming up stage next is DJs KFC & Dave, whom mixed good music for the next few minutes. Twilight gradually replaced the dusk and at this point of time, Ryan and I sneak to the backstage where we chat with Amanda of Electrico on the band latest moves. Amanda is friendly, sincere and nice to chat with. She is not that type of celebrity that is haughty or intentionally creates a distance with fans. Before we return to the party, we request for photo-taking with her and she agreed. By now, darkness has slowly creped in, much delight to the audience.

Returning back, we watch Bushmen delivering an energetic performance on stage. With much anticipation, Bushmen verbally passed the matron to the renowned local percussion group Wicked Aura Batucada. Sounds of drum beat are heard over the air but no sight of the group is seemed. The beats are getting louder and nearer, with random screaming from the rear crowd. Both the beats and screaming are getting nearer to the stage. Sensing that Wicked Aura Batucada is actually making their entrance from the main gates (located at the far rear), the party crowd swiftly shift backwards, joining in the fun. It is much like typical Malay wedding procession, except for the fact that skimpy-dressed dancers are dancing wildly to the hot samba beat. Proceeding at a slow speed, the climax of the party is reached with the crowd tapping to the beats accompanied with loud random screams.

LTA has award 3 contracts with a total worth of $18.014million on road works for the inaugural F1 Singapore Grand Pix on 28 September 2008. This includes widening of Raffles Boulevard and Marina Promenade, modification to existing road kerbs and traffic islands, construction of a 1.2km road forming the eastern section of the circuit and a new underpass plus service road to the pit building. Works are expected to commence in October 2007 and will complete by May 2008. Advance information will be provided and traffic diversions will be carried out to guide motorists affected by the works. Road works will be conducted during non-peak hours where possible to minimise disruption of traffic.

Construction of the 29 stations CCL is progressing as planned for completion from 2010 onwards. Station structures for 14 stations are completed, with architectural, electrical and mechanical works in progress. Station structure works have start for 10 other stations and the remaining 5 stations, of which includes the new Nicoll Highway station, are at excavation stage. Tunnelling along the CCL alignment is also progressing smoothly with 25km out of 33.5km completed. Works in Kim Chuan Depot are almost completed, with full completion expected at year end. To date, 12 of the 40 trains for CCL have arrived and delivered to Kim Chuan Depot. The remaining trains will be delivered progressively over the next one year.

Built in 5 stages, CCL is an orbital MRT line that links all MRT lines running into the city. This 33km long medium-capacity system of 29 underground stations, including 6 interchange stations, will offer inter-suburban connectivity by bypassing the city. Construction for all 5 stages is in full swing and CCL is expected to open for passenger service from 2010 onwards.

URA is setting aside 60ha of land at Marina South for a landmark waterfront-garden residential district. Strategically located between Gardens at Marina South and Straits of Singapore, some 11,000 housing units have been planned with a mix of commercial, hotel and community facilities. Marina South Residential District offers a rare opportunity to experience waterfront living amid lush garden setting with a panoramic view of the city skyline.

Marina Bay is planned as a seamless extension of the existing City and will be the focal point of development in the immediate future. As Downtown @ Marina Bay and Bayfront districts have already been earmarked for exciting new developments, Marina South Residential District is being master planned by URA as the next stage of development in Marina Bay.

URA and Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) are jointly organising a Design Ideas Competition for Marina South Residential District, to garner refreshing and innovating ideas and inspirations for the master plan. The competition is open to all local and international students and professionals in planning, architecture and landscape fields. The submission has to illustrate high density city living within waterfront garden, emphasis on environmental sustainability and a sense of community, set new benchmark in residential development, and make Marina South a landmark district showcasing Singapore's Garden City image. Up to 10 best ideas will be awarded a sum of $50,000, to be distributed equally among the winning teams.

The competition is launched on 13.9.07 and closed on 12.11.07. All design submissions will be publicly exhibited in November as part of Singapore Design Festival 2007, during which the winning designs will be announced. The winning ideas may be incorporated into URA Marina South Master Plan, which will be exhibited as part of Master Plan 2008 next year.

I'm rather upset for returning back from School of Art, Design & Media Freshman Orientation Camp on the evening of 26.7.07 with a sprain ankle. The swelling is getting worse, numbness and serious bruises at the vicinity of the swelling, on and near the toes. It is particularly bad on my 4th toe that practically more than 80% is bruised. This makes me really frighten...

On the morning of 27.7.07, papa and mumy accompanied me to "Tan Chong Shin Chinese Physician" at Bedok Reservoir for treatment. After examining my right foot for some time, Dr Tan isn't optimistic with my injury and referred me to SATA Uttamram Medical Centre for X-ray. Following the X-ray, lunch at Bedok Blk 216 market is uneasy, although nothing sarcastic heard from my folks, the atmosphere is still a little different from normal. It is a rainy afternoon and the wait to collect my Radiology Report is incredibly long... With a dozen failed attempt to doze off, my X-ray Films and Radiology Report are finally ready for collection. Much to my disappointment, my right foot was diagnosed with an undisplaced fracture of the 5th metatarsal base. This somehow annoyed me as I'm just being fully discharged from TTSH, and having a 2nd fracture within a mere 6 months...

Upon reaching home, mumy and I reapplied the cling wrap, towel and plastic bag wrapping method to waterproof the cast. Unlike the previous metacarpal injury, water still sneak through the protective layers which cause my cast to be seriously damp. It is only until the next appointment that the nurse advice me to sit down for shower, thus effectively elevated the injured foot away from the water...

On the following Monday 30.7.07, I return to "Tan Chong Shin Chinese Physician" to show Dr Tan my X-ray Films. As I need to attend SADM Freshman Orientation & NTU Freshman Welcome Day on 3.8.07, I change my next appointment to 2.8.07...

During this period of time, climbing of stairs is mission impossible and walking for just an extremely short distance can be very tedious, tiring and time-consuming... For weeks to follow, I have to rush back home every Monday (6.8.07, 13.8.07, 20.8.07 & 27.8.07) after literature lecture and take bus #21 to Bedok Reservoir for my appointment; and for every Friday (10.8.07, 17.8.07, 24.8.07 & 31.8.07) I have to go for my appointment in the morning first, have my lunch before going home, then go for literature tutorial. These additional journeys make my already tight schedules worse, with much lesser time for homework...

Overtime, I get close with Dr Tan and the nurses which we would start having casual chat. Frequent visit to Bedok Reservoir N7C allows me to rediscover the tranquil centre and reminiscence of maths tuition days, "Go Discover Tour" and wisdom tooth. The spice shop still smells marvellous and I also discovered that the bakery shop nearby is good and the colourful egg biscuit do brings back a little of my childhood crave for it. The biggest pity is that I do not get to eat my favourite fish ball minced meat meepok...

Treatment by Dr Tan is not painful and scent of the medication oil is fragrance. Pain, swelling, numbness and bruises are rapidly reduced after few treatments. The greatest relief I get is when Dr Tan pull my toes for better blood circulation which heals bruises...

Finally on 4.9.07, after submitting my 3D Wire project, which I work helplessly over the night, Dr Tan told me that my fracture is healing well and it will be my last appointment. This sounds relief as it means I no longer need to rush between my home, Bedok Reservoir and NTU. But the best part would still be having both feet stepped firmly on the ground again and not needing to wrap cling wrap, towel and plastic bag around the cast for a sit shower...

Corporatisation of Changi Airport (31.8.07)

The government plan to reconstruct CAAS and corporatise Changi Airport in the next 18 to 24 months. Currently, CAAS is a statutory board under Ministry of Transport, in charge of monitoring the aviation industry and operation of Changi Airport, whereas its international businesses are handled by its wholly-owned subsidiary Changi Airports International (CAI).

The government will provide consultants to assist the corporatisation of Changi Airport and design new managing regulations for CAAS, which the entire process will take approximately 18 to 24 months. The reconstruct CAAS will solely maintain and develop the aviation industry. The corporatisation of Changi Airport will increase the competitiveness and flexibility in operation of Changi Airport, thus securing Singapore as the regional aviation hub. The government will wholly-owned Changi Airport in the initial stage of corporatisation.

CAAS commence overall trial on boarding, departure, automated baggage transportation system and boarding gates security for Terminal 3 on 30.8.07. Testing for Terminal 3 operations began in June 2007, of which includes passenger movements in June and July. Starting from August, military, cargo and SIA planes will operate from Terminal 3 to stimulate various operation procedures, including departure, arrival and transfer handling. Before commencing operation on 9.1.08, Terminal 3 will conduct more than 50 tests employing manpower of over 5,000.

ERP is a key tool for managing congestion, by maintaining traffic flow within the optimal speed range of 45km/h to 60km/h on expressways and 20km/h to 30km/h on arterial roads. Based on the latest review of traffic conditions on roads, LTA will extend the coverage of ERP at the following locations with effect from 1.11.07.

Charging hours of ERP gantry on south-bound CTE between Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Braddell Road will be extended to operate from 7am to 11am on weekdays.

New morning ERP gantry will be erected on south-bound BKE after Dairy Farm Road exit, operating from 7.30am to 9am on weekdays.

New evening ERP gantry will be erected along north-bound CTE before PIE exit with charging hours between 5.30pm and 10.30pm on weekdays. Evening ERP will also be implemented on east-bound ECP at 2 access points (before Rochor Road exit and on Ophir Road slip road) from 6pm to 8pm during weekdays.

New ERP gantries will also be installed along south-bound Upper Bukit Timah Road (after Hume Avenue), Toa Payoh Lorong 6, Geylang Bahru, Kallang Bahru and Upper Boon Keng Road; but will not be activated until speed of traffic falls below optimal speed range. Prior notice will be given before levying any ERP charges at theses gantries.

HDB introduces 2 new upgrading programmes (21.8.07)

For greater flexibility in the provision of improvement works and optimization of facilities across adjoining precincts, HDB will be introducing 2 new upgrading programmes, namely Home Improvement Programme (HIP) and Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP).

Replacing the MUP, HIP will address common maintenance problems in ageing flats. HIP comprises 2 components of essential (examples include replacement of electrical supply, waste pipes and bamboo sockets) and optional (like upgrading of toilet and replacement of entrance door, gate and refuse hopper) improvements. However unlike MUP, HIP is more targeted and allows flat owners to opt out optional improvements. For Singapore citizen flat owners, the government will fully fund essential improvements and will subsidize a major portion of the cost for optional improvements, which lessees can pay using CPF savings, cash or a combination of both. Only flats built on or before 1986 and have not undergone MUP are eligible for HIP. HIP will only proceed for blocks with at least 75% owners voted in flavour. HIP will be piloted in Yishun and Tampines, details of pilot precincts will be announced over the next few months.

While HIP focus on improvements within the flat, NRP focus on precinct or block level improvements. Replacing the IUP, the NRP will be carried out in a bigger scale over 2 or more contiguous precincts instead of 1 to ensure nearby facilities complement and not duplicate each other. For NRP, residents are also invited to suggest feedback for additional facilities. NRP will be fully funded by the government. Only flats built on or before 1989 and have not undergone MUP, IUP or IUP Plus are eligible for NRP. NRP will only proceed for neighbourhood with at least 75% owners voted in flavour.

The LUP will continue to be carried out to provide lift access on every floor for all eligible blocks by 2014.

Details of the 2 new upgrading programmes will be showcase to the public through a series of exhibition titled "Remaking Our Heartland" at 7 locations.

LTA to begin works for F1 Singapore Grand Pix Street Circuit (10.8.07)

LTA is slated to begin work on roads and paddock building of the street circuit for the inaugural F1 Singapore Grand Pix on 28 September 2008. With more than 70% made up of existing road networks, the 5.05km long street circuit offers a number of overtaking opportunities, fast turns and technically challenging sections for F1 race drivers, presenting the viewers with compelling race action. The paddock building will house the control tower, garages, hospitality rooms, press room and other facilities. Once the race route is confirmed by FIA, proposed road works includes construction of a 1.2km road forming the eastern section of the circuit, a new underpass and service road to the pit building, widening of Raffles Boulevard and Marina Promenade, and modification to existing road kerbs and traffic islands.

These artworks are 2 of my assignment for "Colour & Composition".

Fish

"Fish" is my Coloured Geometric Forms assignment for Colour & Composition which I obtain an 'A' for this. Decided on the theme of deep sea fish, the main and secondary pictures are originally taken from "Newsweek", all being cut up to fit into the pre-drawn grid. Something interesting to take note is that the final column of the main picture is slightly shorter than the grid, so I creatively slice it up to create an illusion of a small fish swimming through.

spring / upload

"spring / upload" is my poster design assignment for Colour & Composition which I scored an 'A' again. The assignment requires designing or redesigning a newspaper or magazine cover to create an effective composition of typography. For this assignment, I decided to create a double magazine cover which allows reader to view it logically from both top and bottom by flipping it. The complementary blue and orange colour scheme is chosen, with blue being assigned as the main colour for "upload" and orange being the main colour for "spring".

10th Occupational Therapy (20.7.07)

For the past 2 weeks, besides continuous stiffness from long inactivity and cold room temperature, I still can't crack my fingers and have difficulties counting numbers from inside out. My left wrist and fingers can also still feel the aching is I did not do the ball exercise for long interval...

This is the final time I'm taking bus #21 to TTSH... While listening to Shiina Ringo "平成風俗", I'm busy snapping shoots of the roadside scenery from the bus...

Upon arriving at TTSH, I will always go for a toilet break at the toilet beside Clinic B1A before proceeding to the Department of Occupational Therapy for my appointment. Hand washing is essential before every session and I really love that fragrant scent of the pink soap... As usual Pei Fen conducts a Q&A with me and being the last session, we had longer casual chat throughout...

Although the 15min fluidotheraphy never fail to make my left hand red, this hot grip treatment do help reduce stiffness of the fingers because the heat improve blood circulation... Like on the bus, I'm crazily taking photos while doing the treatment...

Next, Pei Fen directs me into the exercise room where I'm review on my left hand at the BTE PRIMUS exercise machine. The review compares percentile differences between my left and right hand through 3 types of grip tests on strength, movement speed and endurance level... Through this review, Pei Fen concludes that my recovery is fast and good, except that I'm still suffering from muscle atrophy. For future reference, I request from Pei Fen for a memo on my recovery...

As today is the final session, I took a photo with Pei Fen for memorial... I'm given an open date appointment period for the next 3 months... Before leaving, I receive blessing from Pei Fen and other staffs who deem it as a graduation and welcome me back as a designer or for volunteer services if necessary during university life... After the treatment, I stroll around the shops and pharmacy and had lunch at TTSH Kopitiam food court eating chicken rice...

Next, I went for a long satisfying shopping experience at Square 2 where I eat a banana chocolate waffle and green apple milk tea. Being attracted by the retro-futuristic interior decoration, I walk into The Attic, which just shifted from The Centrepoint that day and had a long informative talk with the owner. I buy a metallic silver SIGG water bottle for $33 from Outdoor Life at Novena Square... It then followed by another long enjoyable shopping at Orchard, visiting various shops like Topman, Gap, Fila, Sony Gallery and Isetan at Wisma Atria, various fashion boutiques at B2 of Ngee Ann City where I also read up oricon style, research summer hair styles and buy "NANA 17" at Kinokuniya, The Heeren for HMV and The Centrepoint. I'm surprise to know that Supreme Audio, the huge CD shop that used to locate at Ngee Ann City B2 had shifted to The Centrepoint, which I had another long informative talk with the owner... It is really great to discover 2 great CD shops in a single day as many familiar stores are closing down one from another...
