evolution

22 March 2005

As a preparation for our 'A' Level Examination and a conclusion for our Singapore Art Museum study trip; we had to complete a recycling-themed art project that will substitute the term test. I teamed with Tian An for this project and the two of us started brainstorming ideas for this challenging project.

Drawing inspiration from various artworks and numerous on-the-spot ideas, I finally had an idea for our project. I started drawing a proposal sketch and explained to Tian An about my idea. Although Tian An don't understand my idea initially, he was willing to give it a shoot.

Tian An and I were allocated a striking display location, which is immediately outside the art room, along the busy corridor leading to the canteen. As I only attend school on days when I feel like to, progress of our project was very slow and eventually came to a complete halt. After numerous persuasion and pressure from Eugene, we decided to complete this project with a bang.

Besides collecting numerous waste from our homes, Tian An and I also combed the canteen to collect empty drink cans to construct our project. As our location is prominent, the process of setting up our project attracted numerous attention from our schoolmates. It was rather embarrassing initially, especially because we were dealing with so much waste materials. Plus, several challenges and setbacks occurred while setting up the project, like decomposition of bones and food waste. The most serious problem was how to string the cans together and how to hang the heavy structure up. The best method would be drilling a hole at the base of the can and pass the string through it. But this method was not possible as we do not have the appropriate drilling device and it would be too inefficient and time consuming to punch manually by hand. Thus, after much discussion and consideration, we decided to string through the ring opener of the can and reinforced it with tape to withstand gravity pull.

It was only till the final product was taking shape then Tian An, Eugene and many other classmates understand what I was trying to express from the start. An interesting part of this project is that the BATO stone (mascot of BATO) plays a significant role.

With much effort, we managed to complete this project on time. I am honoured to present the project, titled "evolution" to then principal Mrs Susan Chan.

"evolution" final setup

evolution
1. The ball of string symbolized two things:
- recycling is a cycle that is connected with reduce and reuse (3Rs).
- a link to our story line.
2. Bato (stone):
- People after the stone age invented glass, which is bio-degradable. Therefore, a plant is planted in it.
- Plastic being non-bio-degradable, is harmful to the environment. Therefore, plants and animal dies, which is symbolized by the twigs and bones.
3. The amount of waste thrown away can filled up numerous landfill. This is symbolized by the metal container that is filled with thrash. However, many of these materials can be recycle or reuse. (Do note that materials filled in it are paper, plastic and metal etc).
4. The string of aluminium cans linking the metal container and the ceiling tell us that the amount of metal thrown away could potentially reached the sky (literally). Since so much of these aluminium can be recycled, humans do not reuse or recycle them?
