"Colour & Composition" short course
"Abstract" is the final assignment completed during the experimental "Colour & Composition" short course offered by Temasek Design School (Temasek Polytechnic) in January 2004. Students for this course comes from all walks of life.

"Colour & Composition" further reinforced my drawing skills, painting techniques and knowledge on colours, art and design. With some Art background, I did fairly well throughout this course and this attracted the attention of my lecturer Ms Tia Boon Sim. Ms Tia taught me more drawing techniques by pointing out more of my strengths and weakness.

I am glad that I attended this course with Jing Qi, because this course is a major turning point for me, especially when I was extremely lost in what to do with my future. After completing this course, I realized that my love for drawing is still as strong as when I'm young. Ms Tia encouraged me to further my studies in Art and Design after graduation.

About "Abstract"
This assignment requires the submission of an A3 size semi-abstract painting using tints & shades of a colour and an A3 size process drawing in sketch form showing the development of the painting.

Description of "Abstract"
The concept of my painting is based on the woodpecker "Olly Pekka", the main character of the Nokia Java™ Game "Olly Pekka".

"Abstract" Process Drawing

For Process 1, I sketched out the outline of Olly Pekka and trace it onto a sheet of paper. In Process 2, I overlayed the woodpecker with an enlargement of version of it. The enlargement is again traced onto the same sheet of paper. Next in Process 3, the enlargement was being imported without any changes, while I cropped the original outline into two. I traced part of the outlines as it is and then inverted the piece of paper to trace the remaining lines. Finally, I connected six of the ending points with three lines to make the drawing more complete.

Red (with its tints and shades) was chosen as my choice of colour schemes for the final painting.

I find it difficult to draw a semi abstract image, as creativity is constraint. The drawing must be abstract, but not too simple or complicated to be understandable. My first two attempts are too abstract, leading me to abandon both concepts. Therefore, in conclusion, I personally think that semi abstract is much more difficult than normal abstraction.
