Dot
14 August 2007 "Dot" is my second assignment from the subject "3D Design & Volume". For this assignment, I need to use dots to create a 3D artwork on 12 pieces of A4 cardboards. After some brainstorming, I decided to create dots from construction paper using hole puncher. I will use these dots to create movement, form and volume in 2D space. This assignment is challenging, as it requires creativity, imagination and the use of negative space."Dot" consists of 12 standalone artworks, namely: "Dot: bone", "Dot: surf", "Dot: oasis", "Dot: stem", "Dot: rose", "Dot: river", "Dot: wave", "Dot: fly!", "Dot: fireworks", "Dot: heart", "Dot:文" and "Dot: 彬". Although each piece is a complete artwork, it will form another piece of work (in a bigger scale) when these 12 artworks are joined together.
Dot 1: bone
Dot 2: surf
Dot 3: oasis
Dot 4: stem
Dot 5: rose
Dot 6: river
Dot 7: wave
Dot 8: fly!
Dot 9: fireworks
Dot 10: ♥
Dot 11: 文
Dot 12: 彬
A combination of impressionism and minimalism was adopted to present an abstract imagery. These approaches are particularly obvious in "Dot: surf", "Dot: rose" and "Dot: fireworks". Movement is represented through a series of curves, most notably in the abstract interludes "Dot: stem", "Dot: river", "Dot: wave" and "Dot: fly!".
Negative space was heavily utilized for " bone", "Dot: surf" and "Dot: rose", "river", "wave", "fly!" "fireworks". Visual texture was focused in "Dot: rose" and "Dot: fireworks" to create an illusion of layering. Special attention was paid to geometry, where optical asymmetrical balance is achieved in the standalone artworks and the combined piece. This is to ensure that the artworks looks complete when it is on its own, but yet facilitate the flow of the storyline in the greater perspective.

This assignment might appear easy, but it was surprisingly tedious and time consuming! Much creativity, effort, patient and persistent was needed throughout the work process. Starting from the beginning, I need to brainstorming and plan merticulously to ensure all 12 pages link together. White glue needs to be applied carefully onto the dots using toothpick to prevent it from smearing out of the dot. This is followed by accurate pasting to ensure the dots form the desired line or shape. As a result, I spent the entire National Day working on this project. The effort was definitely worthwhile as I get much satisfaction from the final product.
[This project was submitted for "FDN130 3D Design and Volume Workshop 1" module during AY2007/2008 Semester 1 (ADM Year 1 Semester 1). "FDN130 3D Design and Volume Workshop 1" is a Foundation course offered by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) and was taught by Mr Christopher Toh.]
