New Circle Line (CCL) wayfinding signages & train arrival display announced on 2 July 2026 is a huge step backward from improvement
02 July 2026 Personally, I always find the old CCL signages and train arrival infomation to be extremely confusing! This is because the 3 original terminals (i.e. Dhoby Ghaut, Harbourfront & Marina Bay) are all geographically located in the City/South. Therefore, by stating that this train will be terminating at either Dhoby Ghaut, Harbourfront or Marina Bay station is not helping at all, as it does not give a general sense of direction where this train is heading to. It is particularly problematic when I am at one of those ‘in the middle' stations between Bishan and Paya Lebar, as trains at both platforms are going to the City/South! I always thought that beside labelling the terminal, it is better to show the immediate next stop and the next interchange station (e.g. Paya Lebar, Serangoon, Bishan, Botanic Garden, Buona Vista), to give a better sense of direction where this train is travelling to.So when LTA introduced the revamped way finding signages and train arrival info for CCL on 29 May 2026, I was rejoiced and impressed. I really thought the new display is a very good improvement, as it shows the travelling direction (clockwise/anti-clockwise) and the major interchanges along CCL.
Something important to note is, this is not a new invention created by LTA, but an exact same format used by JR East for the famous Yamanote Line in Tokyo. The 30-stations Yamanote Line is a true loop with no start/end terminal. Yamanote signage, display and announcements shows the immediate next station and the next major interchange (only 6 of them: namely Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Ueno).
This is why I got a rude shock when this proposal received so much criticism and backlash from the public after its announcement and preview. This is especially shocking, considering many Singaporeans crazily flocked to Japan after the pandemic and the Yamanote is probably the most idiot-proof rail line for unseasoned travellers to Tokyo. Not forgetting that Singaporeans are highly educated and Social Studies and Geography are mandatory subjects in school and National Service is compulsory (think about Navigation Exercises).
When LTA announced this so-called ‘improved’ wayfinding signage/display on 2 July 2026, I really do think this new version is a much worse version than the 2 previous renditions, a very big step backwards.
I just feel that majority of locals are very ignorant (like frog in the well) & have extremely poor sense of direction without a 'mental map' of the MRT network to understand the signage.
Let’s not brag we are well-travelled, have high literacy rate, NS is great, etc, when majority cannot comprehend simple navigation map… or it is the silent minority who complaint the loudest? For individuals, at the very least, shall not openly display your ignorance to the world.
